Georgiana Mirza
PhD candidate in digital competition law
Brief info
Prior to joining the Vrije Universiteit, Georgiana accumulated over 8 years of experience in legal advisory roles, specialising in competition law, privacy and data protection, and consumer law. As a practitioner, Georgiana advised clients in administrative proceedings before national and European regulators and in civil proceedings before national courts. With a focus on managing complex multijurisdictional cases, her extensive experience includes a number of the most high profile competition and data protection damages claims in Europe.
In 2024, together with two other colleagues, Georgiana received the Global Competition Review Award for Litigation of the Year - Cartel Defence for her role in the UK Supreme Court ruling that litigation funding agreements, which entitle funders to a percentage of any damages recovered, are considered damages-based agreements and are therefore unenforceable if they do not comply with statutory requirements. The award recognizes creative, strategic and innovative litigation on behalf of a defendant in a private action for cartel damages. The ruling had major implications for the litigation funding sector in the UK and has prompted the UK Parliament's efforts to reform the industry.
As a practitioner, Georgiana advised on competition law and foreign direct investment aspects of a range of M&A matters across a variety of sectors including digital platforms (including the EUR 9 bln sale of Ebay's classified business to Adevinta), medical services (Bergman Clinics / Triton Partners), financial services (Willis Towers Watson/Athora Netherlands), private equity (Parcom/Yource, Parcom/Climate For Life) and various industries (Boels/Cramo, Novio Packaging / Berlin Packaging)
