SUMMARY:Multidisciplinary workshop on persuasive design and manipulation via digital products
DESCRIPTION:ALTI\, in collaboration with the NNHRR – Netherlands Network for Human Rights Research\, is happy to present the interactive workshop on the legal implications of manipulative and persuasive digital products!\n\nDark patterns for cookie consent\, in-game purchases\, the voice of virtual assistants\, prompts from fitness apps: these are only some examples of user interfaces and products designed to be persuasive\, to steer the behaviours of users.\n\nThe possible effects of persuasive design on users are now catching the attention of the EU Commission and of the Council of Europe\, but the exact features of the phenomenon are not clear yet\, especially from the legal perspective. \n\nThis workshop explores the implications of persuasive design with a multidisciplinary approach\, putting together in one room lawyers\, designers\, social scientists\, computer scientists\, and ethicists. \n\nOn November 19\, the works will be opened with a keynote by a special guest: Mr. Jan Kleijssen\, Director of Information Society – Action against Crime\, Directorate General Human Rights and Rule of Law of the Council of Europe.\n\n\nThe keynote will be followed by two panels\, with a spectacular line-up of speakers from several disciplines\, and plenty of time for inclusive and lively discussions involving all participants!\n\nThe workshop is interactive and multidisciplinary\, and welcomes participants from law\, but also other relevant academic domain. \n\nParticipation is free. Registration (mandatory) here .\n\nFor any questions\, you can contact ALTI member Silvia De Conca. \n\n.

SUMMARY:IWDS 2021 – the 1st Interdisciplinary Workshop on the Digital Society
DESCRIPTION:IWDS 2021 – the 1st Interdisciplinary Workshop on the Digital Society\nDo you have a research idea that is both interdisciplinary and linked to the digital society? Would you like to present your research\, meet other researchers with similar or complementary interests\, and potentially start new collaborations? Then this event may be for you! \nThe 1st Interdisciplinary Workshop on the Digital Society will be held on December 7\, 2021 at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. We aim to bring together researchers interested in the intersection between digital technology and society. \nDigital technology – from social robotics to smart mobile devices\, from global social media networks to fluent natural language processing tools\, from realistic virtual environments to knowledgeable virtual agents – is rapidly changing\, and society is changing with it. At the same time\, technological solutions are sought for new societal problems such as global social justice\, climate change\, human mobility and sustainability\, or transnational (re)organization of politics and economy. To study how digital technologies and societal problems interact\, we believe in supporting researchers who take on interdisciplinary approaches. \nThis workshop\, organized by the Network Institute\, aims to bring together researchers from different backgrounds interested in the Digital Society and to give them the opportunity to present their work\, get to know and learn from each other\, and initiate common projects. Participating researchers are invited to submit a research paper (either a previously published work or a “work in progress“). They will have the opportunity to show a poster and give a very short lightning presentation. During the conference and the follow-up borrel\, participants will have the opportunity to interact and connect with colleagues from inside and outside the VU. \nSubmission Guidelines for researchers\nWe invite all researchers interested in interdisciplinary topics related to the Digital Society to contribute to our program. There will be a (lightweight) evaluation of all submissions. These should consist of a representative paper of your research (previously published or “work in progress” – the workshop is non-archival) \nAll submissions must be made in PDF format through the EasyChair platform https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=1stiwds \nWe highlight that\, in order to facilitate participation\, we are not requiring researchers to create new contents for the workshop: submissions can be previously-published work or “work in progress” papers. \nProgram\nThe program is currently in the making\, and will include short presentations\, a poster session\, contributed lightning talks and a borrel. \nVenue\nAtrium room – 1st floor of the Medical Faculty building\, VU Amsterdam. \nImportant dates\nSubmission deadline: Nov 15\, 2021\nRegistration deadline: Dec 1\, 2021\nEvent date: Tuesday Dec 7\, 2021 @ 14:00-17:00 followed by a borrel 17:00-18:00 \nOrganization\nThe workshop is organized and sponsored by the Network Institute\, the hub for interdisciplinary research on the Digital Society at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. \nOrganizing committee\n\nKim Baraka — VU\, Department of Computer Science (Social AI group)\nMartina Testori — VU\, Department of Organization Sciences (Force of Gossip group)\nIoana Vrabiescu — VU\, Department of Organization Sciences (Organizational Ethnography)\nKousar Aslam — VU\, Department of Computer Science (Software and Sustainability group)\nTomislav Karačić — VU\, KIN Center for Digital Innovation (AI@Work group)\nAntske Fokkens — VU\, Dept. of Language\, Literature and Communication (Computational Linguistics and Text Mining Lab) / Eindhoven University of Technology (Algorithms\, Geometry and Applications cluster)\nIvano Malavolta — VU\, Department of Computer Science (Software and Sustainability group)

SUMMARY:The future of digital monitoring in the European Union
DESCRIPTION:The future of digital monitoring in the European Union\nLegal compliance is increasingly becoming digital\, and that is a fact. In shaping its digital future\, in the past years\, the European Union has been proposing one legal reform after another\, such as the Digital Services Act (DSA) package or the AI Act. A common thread in these developments is the policy reflection on not only how to update or make new rules for digital markets\, but also how to enforce them effectively. This has already been reflected in earlier instruments such as the Consumer Protection Cooperation (CPC) Regulation\, or the Digital Market Surveillance Regulation. As indicated in the preamble of the latter\, ‘[i]n the age of constant development of digital technologies\, new solutions that could contribute to the effective market surveillance within the Union should be explored’. But what exactly is market surveillance in the digital age? \nDr. Catalian Goanta and Dr. Jerry Spanakis will address the topic in a hybrid ALTI. More specifically\, they will discuss: \n1. What are the biggest trends in digital monitoring in the EU at the moment;\n2. What are the benefits and challenges of digital monitoring?\n3. How can mechanisms of state and capitalist surveillance be avoided where not reasonable? \nREGISTRATION OVER HERE.

SUMMARY:IEEE Workshop towards Decentralized Governance Design
DESCRIPTION:With blockchain\, we have entered the age of computational trust\, in which network orchestration is possible without a trusted third party. Without a trusted third party\, a self-organizing ecosystem requires a decentralized design approach. Digital currencies\, at first glance\, may seem to be a decentralized ecosystem in which peers interact directly with each other. However\, the decision making within these so-called decentralized ecosystems is centrally orchestrated and\, also\, it is not transparent. Fundamental design decisions need to be approached from different angles. Concepts like: a democracy functioning under the rule of law for states\, corporate governance for businesses\, member participation in associations\, can now perhaps also be caught in formal\, executable models as smart contracts. This would require a Decentralized Governance Design approach\, determining the structure of how decisions are taken\, executed and computationally supported within the ecosystem.

SUMMARY:Antitrust Under The Palms
DESCRIPTION:What: Antitrust Under the Palms: A Competition Policy Event \nWhere: Miami\, Florida – venue TBD \nWhen: February 7 -8\, 2023 \nWhy: The need for collaboration is great since it is impossible to overstate the sea change that has occurred in antitrust enforcement over the past year. Policymakers and regulators on both sides of the Atlantic have embarked upon countless initiatives to preemptively regulate and/or sanction large swaths of the economy in the name of competition. \nUnfortunately\, these initiatives appear to be united by a paucity of theoretical underpinnings and several misapprehensions about business\, big or otherwise. To put it mildly\, there is a strong sense that the error-cost framework has\, at least in part\, given way to expediency and politically-motivated intervention. The goal of this event is to discuss more broadly what it means to be a classical competition scholar in this rapidly deteriorating policy environment\, and\, where possible\, to identify points of convergence we can develop together. \nWho: ICLE + ALTI

SUMMARY:Diane Coyle: Welfare Assessment in a Digital Economy
DESCRIPTION:  \n \n* Professor Dame Diane Coyle is the Bennett Professor of Public Policy at the University of Cambridge. She co-directs the Bennett Institute where she heads research under the themes of progress and productivity. \nDescription: Are we seeing the end of technocracy in antitrust? Competition analysis has been for some decades an increasingly technical activity\, with an implicit assumption that there is an underlying ‘correct’ answer in terms of consumer welfare impacts. However\, the normative implications of decisions are becoming increasingly clear in today’s context of extremely dynamic technology-driven markets and the revival of political interest in industrial policies. The way some markets evolve in the short term may shape the supply side of the economy for decades to come\, highlighting the normative choices involved.  \nFormat: Professor Coyle will give a 30-minute talk\, which will be followed by a discussion moderated by Dr. Thibault Schrepel. \n \nLoading…

SUMMARY:Paul Seabright: A Response to the Draghi Report on EU competitiveness
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nSpeaker: Paul Seabright is a Professor of Economics at the Toulouse School of Economics. \nFormat: Professor Seabright will give a 30-minute talk\, which will be followed by a discussion moderated by Dr. Thibault Schrepel. \nDescription: Where\, geographically\, do the benefits of innovative activity accrue? If a highly innovative startup in the EU is highly successful\, what kinds of benefits are created and for whom\, and how is this different if the same startup relocates to Silicon Valley? In the most innovative sectors\, a large share of the benefits accrues to customers (as recent research by Hunt Allcott and others suggests)\, who may be located anywhere in the world. The Draghi Report is hopeless about this\, and much of the current discussion around the importance of keeping manufacturing strong in the EU fails to distinguish between manufacturing that generates real location-specific externalities and manufacturing that merely keeps factories humming. \n \n \nLoading…

SUMMARY:[event] Substance Over Slogans: Strengthening The Foundations of Antitrust
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE\nABOUT:\nOur aim for this conference is to look past the headlines and politicized arguments that have defined the last several years of competition-policy discourse to examine the current academic foundations of antitrust and what they say about contemporary competition policy. \nThe competition-policy landscape is shifting almost as rapidly as the industries it seeks to regulate. Over the past few years\, a new trend has seemingly taken hold of the field: Scholars and enforcers increasingly reject the economically grounded learnings of decades of legal analysis\, enforcement experience\, and applied industrial organization research in favor of untested policy initiatives reflecting mostly political preferences\, not rigorous scholarship. \nAgainst this backdrop\, our Paris conference will discuss the state of the art of economic and legal research\, and explore whether and where it may provide a rigorously supported basis for departing from antitrust’s traditional foundations. \nThe conference will bring together an unparalleled assembly of top academics\, influential policymakers\, and business experts to engage in a dynamic exploration of the assumptions that underpin contemporary competition enforcement. \nCONFIRMED SPEAKERS:\n\nPinar Akman (University of Leeds)\nBrian Albrecht (ICLE)\nGustavo Augusto (Administrative Council for Economics Defense)\nDirk Auer (ICLE)\nReiko Aoki (Japan Fair Trade Commission)\nDennis W. SUMMARY:[event] Sofia Ranchordás: The New Regulatory State
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Sofia Ranchordás is a Full Professor of Administrative Law at Tilburg Law School. \nDescription: In this talk\, Sofia Ranchordas will present her new book with Karen Yeung ‘Introduction to Law and Regulation’ (CUP 2024) by discussing how regulation has evolved in terms of goals and instruments. Regulatory studies have long justified the adoption of new regulations based on economic arguments\, metrics\, and quantifiable methods. But regulation is not only about numbers. It is about people and their everyday quantifiable and non-quantifiable problems. In this talk\, she will discuss how regulators should thus consider race\, gender\, and different socioeconomic inequities in regulation and how this can be translated into modern instruments\, methods\, and theories of regulation. \nFormat: Prof. Ranchordás will give a 30-minute talk\, which will be followed by a discussion moderated by Dr. Thibault Schrepel. \nRecording (Only the presentation Q&A not included):

SUMMARY:[event] Competition Law Doctoral Forum
DESCRIPTION:Organizers: Thibault Schrepel & Georgiana Mirza \nConcept: We are delighted to announce the first edition of the “Competition Law Doctoral Forum.” The concept is simple yet ambitious: to establish an annual gathering of promising PhD candidates in the Netherlands focusing on (digital) competition law issues. Participants will have the opportunity to present their research\, exchange ideas\, and engage in meaningful discussions. For this first edition\, we are pleased to announce that Martijn Snoep\, President of the Dutch Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM)\, will join us. \nWhen: 25 April 2025\, from 09:30 to 16:00. \nWhere: At the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam campus (room will be disclosed to registered participants before the event) \nFormat: This conference uses the 3C Format to structure feedback for each presentation. Every talk will receive three types of comments: 1. Challenge (devil’s advocate); 2. Contribute (fresh perspective); 3. Commend (compliment). Why 3C? This method encourages well‐rounded discussion: identifying potential weaknesses\, suggesting new angles\, and recognizing strengths. It’s designed to keep the exchange both rigorous and supportive. \nProgram: \n9:30 to 10:00 – Reception \n10:00 to 10:10 – Opening remarks (Thibault Schrepel) \n10:10 to 10:20 – Reflecting on 25 years of supervising PhDs (Arno Lodder) \n10:20 to 11:00 – Keynote Martijn Snoep \n11:00 to 12:30 – Session 1 – Competition in digital markets \n\nDavid van Wamel (Leiden University): Commission’s power to impose interim measures in digital markets\nGeorgiana Mirza (VU Amsterdam): Digital ecosystems in competition law and market regulation\nMax van Iersel (Tilburg University): EU merger policy’s impact on startup innovation ecosystems\n\n12:30 to 14:00 – Lunch Break \n14:00 to 15:00 – Session 2 – Overlapping regulatory regimes \n\nBelle Beems (Radboud University Nijmegen): Intersection of competition law\, DMA\, GDPR\, and institutional cooperation\nKena Zhang (Maastricht University): Antitrust in AI infrastructure (data & compute)\, comparing EU\, US\, China\n\n15:00 to 16:00 – Session 3 – Looking ahead ((innovation\, blockchain\, sustainability) \n\nQihan Xu (Erasmus University Rotterdam): Blockchain‐based collusive agreements in China and sufficiency of legislation\nStephanie Penereiro (USP Law School / VU Amsterdam): Competition law and sustainability (origins\, comparative overview\, possible approaches)\n\n16:00 to 16:10 – Closing Remarks (Georgiana Mirza & Thibault Schrepel) \n16:10 to 18:00 – Cocktail reception \n \nRegistration to attend the event: \nLoading…

SUMMARY:[event] Godefroy de Boiscuillé: The EU Digital Single Market Paradox
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Godefroy de Boiscuillé is Maître de Conférences at Côte d’Azur University and Co-Director of the Chair Competition & Digital Economics at Panthéon-Assas University Paris II. \nDescription: The goal of creating a unified digital economy is being undermined by the steady rise in trade barriers\, often framed under the innocuous term “ex ante regulation.” This presentation will focus on four key points: (1) In digital markets\, the approach of negative integration—removing barriers to trade—is increasingly contradicted by new measures that have effects equivalent to quantitative restrictions. (2) The strategy of positive integration—establishing EU-wide norms and standards—is weakened by the proliferation of conflicting standards. (3) Exceptions to the free movement of goods are multiplying\, justified by objectives that often conflict with other equally important goals. (4) While the Digital Single Market is based on the principles of the common market\, it introduces a less liberal philosophy compared to the traditional internal market framework. Together\, these dynamics reveal a paradox: the very goal of a unified digital market risks being undermined by the growing layers of regulation fragmenting the digital economy. \nFormat: Dr. de Boiscuillé will give a 30-minute talk\, which will be followed by a discussion moderated by Dr. Thibault Schrepel. \n  \nLoading…
