SUMMARY:Antitrust Under The Palms
DESCRIPTION:What: Antitrust Under the Palms: A Competition Policy Event \nWhere: Miami\, Florida – venue TBD \nWhen: February 7 -8\, 2023 \nWhy: The need for collaboration is great since it is impossible to overstate the sea change that has occurred in antitrust enforcement over the past year. Policymakers and regulators on both sides of the Atlantic have embarked upon countless initiatives to preemptively regulate and/or sanction large swaths of the economy in the name of competition. \nUnfortunately\, these initiatives appear to be united by a paucity of theoretical underpinnings and several misapprehensions about business\, big or otherwise. To put it mildly\, there is a strong sense that the error-cost framework has\, at least in part\, given way to expediency and politically-motivated intervention. The goal of this event is to discuss more broadly what it means to be a classical competition scholar in this rapidly deteriorating policy environment\, and\, where possible\, to identify points of convergence we can develop together. \nWho: ICLE + ALTI

SUMMARY:IEEE Workshop towards Decentralized Governance Design
DESCRIPTION:With blockchain\, we have entered the age of computational trust\, in which network orchestration is possible without a trusted third party. Without a trusted third party\, a self-organizing ecosystem requires a decentralized design approach. Digital currencies\, at first glance\, may seem to be a decentralized ecosystem in which peers interact directly with each other. However\, the decision making within these so-called decentralized ecosystems is centrally orchestrated and\, also\, it is not transparent. Fundamental design decisions need to be approached from different angles. Concepts like: a democracy functioning under the rule of law for states\, corporate governance for businesses\, member participation in associations\, can now perhaps also be caught in formal\, executable models as smart contracts. This would require a Decentralized Governance Design approach\, determining the structure of how decisions are taken\, executed and computationally supported within the ecosystem.

SUMMARY:The future of digital monitoring in the European Union
DESCRIPTION:The future of digital monitoring in the European Union\nLegal compliance is increasingly becoming digital\, and that is a fact. In shaping its digital future\, in the past years\, the European Union has been proposing one legal reform after another\, such as the Digital Services Act (DSA) package or the AI Act. A common thread in these developments is the policy reflection on not only how to update or make new rules for digital markets\, but also how to enforce them effectively. This has already been reflected in earlier instruments such as the Consumer Protection Cooperation (CPC) Regulation\, or the Digital Market Surveillance Regulation. As indicated in the preamble of the latter\, ‘[i]n the age of constant development of digital technologies\, new solutions that could contribute to the effective market surveillance within the Union should be explored’. But what exactly is market surveillance in the digital age? \nDr. Catalian Goanta and Dr. Jerry Spanakis will address the topic in a hybrid ALTI. More specifically\, they will discuss: \n1. What are the biggest trends in digital monitoring in the EU at the moment;\n2. What are the benefits and challenges of digital monitoring?\n3. How can mechanisms of state and capitalist surveillance be avoided where not reasonable? \nREGISTRATION OVER HERE.

SUMMARY:IWDS 2021 – the 1st Interdisciplinary Workshop on the Digital Society
DESCRIPTION:IWDS 2021 – the 1st Interdisciplinary Workshop on the Digital Society\nDo you have a research idea that is both interdisciplinary and linked to the digital society? Would you like to present your research\, meet other researchers with similar or complementary interests\, and potentially start new collaborations? Then this event may be for you! \nThe 1st Interdisciplinary Workshop on the Digital Society will be held on December 7\, 2021 at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. We aim to bring together researchers interested in the intersection between digital technology and society. \nDigital technology – from social robotics to smart mobile devices\, from global social media networks to fluent natural language processing tools\, from realistic virtual environments to knowledgeable virtual agents – is rapidly changing\, and society is changing with it. At the same time\, technological solutions are sought for new societal problems such as global social justice\, climate change\, human mobility and sustainability\, or transnational (re)organization of politics and economy. To study how digital technologies and societal problems interact\, we believe in supporting researchers who take on interdisciplinary approaches. \nThis workshop\, organized by the Network Institute\, aims to bring together researchers from different backgrounds interested in the Digital Society and to give them the opportunity to present their work\, get to know and learn from each other\, and initiate common projects. Participating researchers are invited to submit a research paper (either a previously published work or a “work in progress“). They will have the opportunity to show a poster and give a very short lightning presentation. During the conference and the follow-up borrel\, participants will have the opportunity to interact and connect with colleagues from inside and outside the VU. \nSubmission Guidelines for researchers\nWe invite all researchers interested in interdisciplinary topics related to the Digital Society to contribute to our program. There will be a (lightweight) evaluation of all submissions. These should consist of a representative paper of your research (previously published or “work in progress” – the workshop is non-archival) \nAll submissions must be made in PDF format through the EasyChair platform https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=1stiwds \nWe highlight that\, in order to facilitate participation\, we are not requiring researchers to create new contents for the workshop: submissions can be previously-published work or “work in progress” papers. \nProgram\nThe program is currently in the making\, and will include short presentations\, a poster session\, contributed lightning talks and a borrel. \nVenue\nAtrium room – 1st floor of the Medical Faculty building\, VU Amsterdam. \nImportant dates\nSubmission deadline: Nov 15\, 2021\nRegistration deadline: Dec 1\, 2021\nEvent date: Tuesday Dec 7\, 2021 @ 14:00-17:00 followed by a borrel 17:00-18:00 \nOrganization\nThe workshop is organized and sponsored by the Network Institute\, the hub for interdisciplinary research on the Digital Society at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. \nOrganizing committee\n\nKim Baraka — VU\, Department of Computer Science (Social AI group)\nMartina Testori — VU\, Department of Organization Sciences (Force of Gossip group)\nIoana Vrabiescu — VU\, Department of Organization Sciences (Organizational Ethnography)\nKousar Aslam — VU\, Department of Computer Science (Software and Sustainability group)\nTomislav Karačić — VU\, KIN Center for Digital Innovation (AI@Work group)\nAntske Fokkens — VU\, Dept. of Language\, Literature and Communication (Computational Linguistics and Text Mining Lab) / Eindhoven University of Technology (Algorithms\, Geometry and Applications cluster)\nIvano Malavolta — VU\, Department of Computer Science (Software and Sustainability group)

SUMMARY:Multidisciplinary workshop on persuasive design and manipulation via digital products
DESCRIPTION:ALTI\, in collaboration with the NNHRR – Netherlands Network for Human Rights Research\, is happy to present the interactive workshop on the legal implications of manipulative and persuasive digital products!\n\nDark patterns for cookie consent\, in-game purchases\, the voice of virtual assistants\, prompts from fitness apps: these are only some examples of user interfaces and products designed to be persuasive\, to steer the behaviours of users.\n\nThe possible effects of persuasive design on users are now catching the attention of the EU Commission and of the Council of Europe\, but the exact features of the phenomenon are not clear yet\, especially from the legal perspective. \n\nThis workshop explores the implications of persuasive design with a multidisciplinary approach\, putting together in one room lawyers\, designers\, social scientists\, computer scientists\, and ethicists. \n\nOn November 19\, the works will be opened with a keynote by a special guest: Mr. Jan Kleijssen\, Director of Information Society – Action against Crime\, Directorate General Human Rights and Rule of Law of the Council of Europe.\n\n\nThe keynote will be followed by two panels\, with a spectacular line-up of speakers from several disciplines\, and plenty of time for inclusive and lively discussions involving all participants!\n\nThe workshop is interactive and multidisciplinary\, and welcomes participants from law\, but also other relevant academic domain. \n\nParticipation is free. Registration (mandatory) here .\n\nFor any questions\, you can contact ALTI member Silvia De Conca. \n\n.
